Art & Design
"Every human is an artist." - Don Miguel Ruiz
At Meole Brace C of E Primary School and Nursery, we pride ourselves on the full and rich Art and Design curriulum we provide to all pupils from Nursery to Year 6 and our commitment to the children's arts and cultural education was recently recognised with the award of the prestigious Artsmark Gold Award, the only creative quality standard for schools, accredited by Arts Council England.
During their Art and Design lessons, children grow their knowledge and appreciation of art in a variety of forms and styles and from a variety of cultures. A long term plan of progression enables them to build and develop their knowledge and skills as they move up through the school. They learn to use different art techniques and develop an awareness of shape, colour, texture and pattern, while also developing an understanding of the properties of materials.
The inspiration for the art we create in Art and Design often comes from other curriculum areas - we seize the opportunites our wider school curriculum provides us with to stimulate thought, discussion and imagination. Children also learn about artists and crafts people from a range of cultures and time periods, exposing them to the vibrancy of the art world and helping them to develop an understanding that art can be produced in a wide range of media.
In addition to their timetabled Art and Design lessons, a whole-school Arts Week in the summer term gives children the time and opportunity to focus on a sustained project and to apply the knowledge and skills they have built up over the year, while working with local and professional artists to add further inspiration and expertise.
